A relatively young distillery by comparison, Tomintoul was founded in 1964 at the heart of Scottish Speyside. Since then it has become a real insider tip amongst whisky connoisseurs. The distillery, currently owned by Angus Dundee Distillers, twice expanded by adding a pair of stills in its short history: owners Whyte & Mackay decided to increase the capacity in 1974, having acquired the distillery a year earlier from founders W & S Strong and Hay & MacLeod. Today, numerous bottles of Tomintoul Single Malt Whisky are produced for sale, but a large part of the production is used for blended whisky. After the acquisition of Tomintoul by Angus Dundee in 2000, its Single Malt has earned an excellent reputation with its followers.
