History
The Tomintoul Distillery was founded in 1964 by the whiskey brokers Hay & MacLleod and the W. & S. Strong Ltd, as Tomintoul Distillery Ltd. As early as mid-1965, the distillery was put into operation.
In 1973, the distillery was sold to the investor Scottish & Universal Investment Trust, which soon transferred the management to the company White & Mackay Ltd. After further owner changes from 1989, took over in 2000, the Angus Dundee plc the possession of Tomintoul.

Production
In 1974, the distillery was extended to its 10th anniversary and the capacity of the stills increased from two to four stills.
Tomintoul has a large warehouse. The malt and material stored there is sufficient to cover the production for about two weeks. This is necessary because of the altitude at which the distillery is located. It may happen that the distillery is cut off from the outside world in winter due to heavy snowfall.
The stored malt is delivered by large malting plants and ground to grist in an old Porteus mill.
Tomintoul also has its own Blend Center, which prepares mixtures for blended whiskeys. The whiskey is added to some blends such as "Parker's", "White & Mackay" or the "Dundee".

The storage
The malts from Tomintoul are mainly bottled in ex-Bourbon barrels made of American white oak and stored in high-rise buildings with high shelves. For some bottlings, Oloroso sherry casks or European oak port wine casks are also used to achieve a particular finnishing.
