The name „Fettercairn“ comes from the Gaelic and translated means „at the foot of the mountain“. Anyone who has ever visited the distillery knows that its name is to be taken literally. Fettercairn was built in 1824 by Alexander Ramsay in an old flour mill. The family arms - a white unicorn - adorns the bottles of the distillery until today. His successor was no less a figur than Sir John Gladstone. He was the father of William who later became Prime Minister. William was an essential forerunner of the Scottish whisky industry. During his tenure, he enacted important reformations which prevented disproportionate taxation of barley and allowed to sell whisky in bottles to private persons. Incidentally, Fettercairn even is the oldest licensed whisky distillery of the Highlands.
