History
The Lagavulin Distillery was built in 1816 by John Johnston on today's distillery grounds. Archibald Campbell also built a second major distillery there a year later. In 1825, both distilleries were taken over by John Johnston and merged in 1837 by his son Donald to the present-day distillery Lagavulin.
John Graham bought Lagavulin in 1852 but was not very successful for the next 15 years. Rather run down, he sold them to James Logan Mackie & Co. in 1867. A nephew of James Logan, Peter Mackie, inherited the distillery in 1889 and changed the name of the Mackie & Co holding company, which merged with White Horse Distillers Ltd in 1923. These merged with the DCL in 1927 and the management handed them over to the SMD in 1930.
When the DCL was taken over by Guinness, Lagavulin went to the UDV in 1986/87. Since 1997, the UDV with Lagavulin belongs to the Diageo Group.
On the grounds next to the Lagavulin Distillery, another distillery was opened in 1908, called Malt Mill, which produced a heavily peated whiskey, among other things, as the second production line for Lagavulin. Since 1959/60 this is no longer produced.

The storage
The maturation of the Lagavulin malts takes place in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. Almost all of the production is housed on the mainland in the large Diageo warehouses because of their own full warehouses. A part has already been stored at the Port Ellen Distillery.
