History
As one of Scotland's oldest active distilleries, the Tobermory Distillery is the only one on the Scottish island of Mull. It was founded in 1798 by John Sinclair. However, since the distillery was not really ready for production until 1823, the founding date is also indicated as 1823.
The history of the distillery is not well documented. It also followed several owner changes. However, it is known that Tobermory was more decommissioned over time than it was producing. The longest periods of production breaks were probably from 1837 to 1878 and from 1930 to 1972.
Since 1990 Tobermory produces without interruption. It was acquired in 1993 by the company Burn Steward Distillers plc, which was acquired in 2013 by the South African Distell Group.

Production
The distillery gets its barley mainly from Port Ellen Maltings and stores it in small silos before being grinded in the old mazl mill.
Two different types of whiskey are produced. Both are burned in the same stills and differ in peat content. The untagged >Tobermory< and the slightly peated >Ledaige< (pronounced Ledschig) each contribute half of the annual production. In the past, a third single malt called "Iona Atoll" was produced. This is no longer produced today. The majority of malts are used to make the >Scottish Leader blend.

The storage
Tank trucks transport the malts to the Deanston Distillery, where they are bottled and stored in barrels. The Tobermory distillery's own warehouse houses only very few barrels.
