History
The Talisker distillery was founded in 1830 by the two brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill and is the only distillery on the Isle of Skye so far. It was built at Loch Harport, near the manor house where the brothers lived.
Due to insolvency the distillery was taken over by a bank in 1948, nevertheless the MacAskills were allowed to operate it. After Kenneth's death in 1854, his brother Hugh continued the distillery alone. When he died too, his son-in-law took over the lease in 1963, but soon went bankrupt.
Subsequently, J. R. W. Anderson took over the distillery, but he was imprisoned for fraud. He had sold still stocked whiskey, which was not available. In 1880 Roderick Kemp (Macallan) and Alexander Grigor bought Allan Talisker.
From 1892 Allan became the sole owner. After his death, his heirs merged with the Dailuaine distillery to Dailuaine-Talisker Distilleries LTD and in 1925 this part of the DCL. Today the distillery belongs to the company UDV (United Distillers & Vinters LTD), which has been part of Diageo since 2002.

Production
Until 1928, the Talisker Distillery practiced the triple distillation, then was switched to the double distillation.
In 1960, the distillery was almost completely destroyed and rebuilt by a major fire. Today's facilities, buildings and stills are from this period. In 1972, the malt house was closed. Since then, the distillery has been sourcing its barley from large-scale maltings and storing it in its own malt stores, until it is grinded to a grist by the old Porteus mill.

The storage
The Talisker Malts are bottled exclusively in ex-Boubon barrels and stored in low-level warehouses with natural soils. The bottlings of the Distillers Edition also require ex-sherry casks for finnishing.
Since the capacity of the warehouses is insufficient, a large part is brought to the mainland by tanker truck and stored there.
