History
The Springbank Distillery was founded in 1828 by the Reid family and licensed. By the end of the 18th century, a relative of the Springbank family, Archibald Mitchell, had distilled whiskey there. Due to financial problems, the Reid family had to sell the distillery in 1837.
The two sons of Archibald Mitchell, John and William, bought up Springbank and took over the license. Since then, the distillery has been family owned. Today's manager Hedley G. Wright is the principal shareholder of J. & A. Mitchell, founded in 1897, and represents the seventh generation of the family.

Production
The Springbank Distillery produces three different malt whiskeys. The >Springbank<, >Longrow< and since 1997 the >Hazelburn<. All three have a different peat content.
The required malt is produced in the two-storey malt house on two malting floors. Then the germinating malt is dried in kiln with different peat content and then ground in an old malt mill.
In different processes, the three whiskeys are fired, but for the same stills are used and the first run is the same for everyone.
For the intensively peated> Longrow <is distilled twice as usual. For the not peated> Hazelburn <one applies a triple distillation. Two and a half times the distillation is the technique used in the "Springbank". In this case, in the third firing part of the finest, from the second firing with a small proportion of low wines from the first distillation mixed and fired again. The> Springbank <lies with its peat content between the two other whiskeys.
The Springbank Distillery is one of the few that have their own bottling.
