History
The Mortlach distillery was the only one until 1887, making it the oldest legal distillery in Dufftown. However, when she was founded in 1823 by James Findlater and his partners Alexander Gordon and Donald Mackintosh, she was the first distillery in the town.
Until the 1830s, several owner changes took place. Then the brothers James and John Grant took over Mortlach, but laid them down after a short time. Mortlach was then converted into a brewery and the distillation plants were used for the Glen Grant Distillery in Rothes.
John Gordon bought the distillery in 1852 and put it into operation with new distillery facilities. When George Cowie became financially involved in the distillery in 1854, they co-operated as John Gordon & Co.
John Walker & Sons bought the distillery in 1923. Two years later, Mortlach came to the DCL. Through the acquisition by Guinness in 1987, the new company UDV, which has been part of Diageo plc since 1997.

Production
By doubling the previously only three stills, the capacity of the still was increased in 1897. In the years 1963/64 Mortlach received a new look through a near-renewal and in 1996 another extensive renovation took place.
The own malting was closed in 1968, the required malt we are now delivered by large malting and then grinded in an old Porteus mill to grist.
The special feature of the distillation at Mortlach is that part of the whiskey is distilled in a triple distillation process. The finest (after-run) of the two wash stills is again distilled in the spirit still No.1 (the smallest still). This method is called by Mortlach> We witchy <(Little Witch).

The storage
The malts of the Mortlach distillery are quickly matured exclusively in ex-sherry casks. The barrels are transported in the large warehouses from Diageo to Alloa where they are filled and stored. Only a small part is unloaded in the warehouses with natural floors.
