History

The Linkwood Distillery was founded in 1821 by Peter Brown. After his death in 1868, his son William took over the management of the distillery.

Since the demand for the Linkwood whiskey was very large even then, William Brown wanted to expand the distillery. However, this was not possible with the existing building, so he had the existing distillery completely demolished in the early 1870s and rebuilt. In 1974, the distillery was inaugurated and production started.

In 1897, Linkwood was incorporated into the joint stock company Linkwood-Glenlivet Distillery Co. Ltd, which was acquired in 1933 by the SMD, later transferred to the UDV and 1997 was integrated into the Diageo Group.

Production

The required malt was supplied by the large malting plant of the Diageo Group and stored in large silos. It is still ground from an old malt mill.

In a major renovation and expansion in the years 1971 to 1973, a second stillhouse was built, bringing in 4 new stills.

Much of the malts migrate into the blends of the brands Bells, White Horse, Dimple, Johnnie Walker and Haig.

The storage

Linkwood stores its malts in a number of warehouses. For ripening, both ex-bourbon barrels and ex-sherry barrels are used, which are imported from America and Spain. Rum bottlings, red wine and port wine barrels were also used as finishings in the bottlings launched in 2008.
