History
The Knockando Distillery was founded in 1898 by John Thomson. However, it was shut down after just nine months due to financial problems. Thomson then founded with some donors, the J. Thomson & Co., but he also could not overcome the financial problems. Thus, the distillery was shut down again in 2003.
In 1904, W. & A. Gilbey Ltd. became the new owner of Knockando, which immediately restarted production. A year later, the distillery was connected by a siding to Aberdeen and Elgin and was, with the exception of the two world wars, always in operation.
Through a merger with the Unites Wine Traders (Unwins) 1962, the IDV Ltd. was created. Other owner changes followed until Knockando was taken over in 1974 by the hotel chain Grand Metropolitan. This went through a merger in 1987 to the Diageo Group.

Production
Since its own malting plant was abandoned in 1968, the malt is supplied by large malting companies and then stored in malt-bins (malt silos) before being processed to a high-grade by the old malt mill.
In 1969, the capacity of the distillery was increased from two to four stills during a conversion and expansion.
Knockando plays an important role in the blends of J & B, which are number 2 in the worldwide market. Since 2005 Knockando belongs to the classic malts.

The storage
The malts from the Knockando Distillery have been bottled and stored at Auchroisk and Glenlossie for a few years. Only a part of the barrels will come back to their own low warehouses with natural floors. For maturation preferably ex-Bourbon barrels are used, but ex-sherry casks are also used.
