History
In 1824, Cullen, a small fishing village near Banff, had a distillery called Tochineal. This was founded by John Wilson, but he had to give up the distillery in 1868, as the landowner doubled the lease.
According to stories, the landlord's wife demanded the closure of Tochineal, as she was a member of an association against alcohol control. Then her husband should have doubled the lease to bring about the closure.
Moments later John Wilson's nephew, with his company Alexander Wilson & Co., built a new distillery a few miles away and named it Inchgower. The new distillery was able to start production in 1871. It remained until her bankruptcy in 1930, owned by Alexander Wilson and his company.
Until Inchgower was sold to Arthur Bell & Sons Ltd in 1936, the city government took over the direction of the distillery. In 1985, the company was bought by Guinness, but still kept her license for the distillery. After the takeover of the DCL and the emergence of the UDV, Inchgower today belongs to the Diageo Group.

Production
In 1966, the distillery was expanded and totally refurbished, doubling the number of existing two stills.
It is not entirely clear since when your own malting plant is no longer operated. It can be assumed, however, that the closure took place in 1966 at the latest. Today, the Inchgower Distillery draws its barley malt from large malting plants. The old Porteus mill grinds the barley to grist.
Most of the whiskey produced is used for the blends Bell's, WhiteHorse and JohnnieWalker. Only a very small proportion is marketed as Malt.
