History
The Glen Garioch Distillery was built in 1794 on the site of a former tannery, by the brothers John and Alexander Manson. Since its foundation, the distillery already bears its name. Thus, Glen Garioch is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland.
The history of Glen Garioch is marked by many changes of ownership and shutdowns. Because of permanent lack of water, the distillery was closed in 1968 by the then owner DCL. In 1970 it was bought by Morrison Bowmore.
Meanwhile, the company became a stock corporation Morrison Bowmore LTD. Thus, in 1989, the Japanese Suntory Group began buying Morrison shares. In 1994, the company was completely taken over by Suntory.
After another closure in 1995, Morrison Bowmore decided to invest again in the Glen Garioch distillery. The operation was resumed in 1997 after a few renovations.

Production
In search of a new reliable source of water, the so-called "Silent Spring of Coutens Farm" was found in 1972, a spring at the bottom of a neighboring farm. This could deliver 10 times the amount of water than the previous source of water. The capacity was raised in the same year to a new quiet.
The floor maltings (malting floors), which are located on three floors in the malt house, have long since ceased to be used. The delivered barley malt is stored in large malt silos and processed in the old mill to grist.

The storage
Glen Garioch's malts are bottled in Glasgow. For this purpose, the new make is transported in tanker trucks and later brought back to Glen Garioch for storage in the low warehouses with natural floors. The distillery mainly uses ex-bourbon casks as well as ex-sherry casks. Morrison Bowmore uses most of the malts for his blends, such as Rob Roy.
