Deanston

History

The Deanston Distillery was founded by Deanston Distillery Co. Ltd. in 1965/66 and was owned 50% by Brodie Hepburn Ltd (Tullibardine) and James Finlay & Co.

It is one of the youngest distilleries in Scotland and was set up in a cotton mill and weaving mill built in 1785, which provided electricity through a dam on the River Teith, through a small power plant. Deanston is still the only distillery in Scotland to use the power plant to produce electricity.

In 1972, the distillery was bought by Invergordon Distillers Ltd. Two years later, they launched the first Deanston singlemalt on the market. In 1982, the distillery was shut down and only in 1991 by the company Burn Stewart Distillers plc put into operation.

CL World Brands Ltd. (Trinidad & Tobago) acquired only 18% of Burn Stewart Distillers plc in 1999 and the remainder of the company in 2002.

The storage

The maturation and storage of malts takes place in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. But they are also available in other finishing versions.

Not only the malts from Deanston are stored on the distillery. Since the Tobermory distillery has no own warehouses, it stores her barrels at Deanston.

Impressive for visitors, is the visit of one of the warehouses of the original weaving mill, which has a vaulted ceiling and offers optimal climatic conditions.
