The history
The Dalwhinnie Distillery was originally founded in 1897 under the name Strathspey. Just one year later, the company of three founders John Grant, Alexander Mackanzie and George Sellar went bankrupt. The distillery was then divided equally by A.P. Blyth & Sons. and John Sommerville & Co., who renamed them Dalwhinnie.
As early as 1905, Cook & Bernheimer bought up Dalwhinnie, until in 1919 Greenlees & Williams ltd. was taken over and sold in 1926 to the DCL. In 1987, the UDV took over the management of the distillery.
In 1934, a major fire destroyed a large part of the distillery, as a result, Dalwhinnie four years later could resume production.
Today, Dalwhinnie Distillery is owned by Diageo plc and is part of their Classic Malts range.
