History
On April 20, 1608, King James I granted Mr. Thomas Phillips, landowner and Governor of Co. Antrim Ireland, a license to distill. In 1784 the Old Bushmills Destilerie was officially founded. This also introduced Pot Still as a trademark. As the name of the distillery suggests, Bushmills is right next to the River Bush, from where the water is extracted for production.
From 1880 to the early 1900's, Bushmills had its golden years of success to celebrate. The whiskey has received numerous awards in international competitions, including "the only gold medal for whiskey" at the Paris Fair in 1889.

Production
The distillery not only makes blends of single malt and grain whiskey, but also single malt whiskeys like the Bushmills 10 years ago. As with most distilleries in Ireland, Bushmills also uses the pot still method.
The storage
Bushmills uses only selected, high-quality oak barrels for maturing the whiskey. Barrels that had previously stored other distillates such as sherry are subsequently used to finish.
