History
The Tomatin Distillery was built in 1897 by the Tomatin-Spey District Distillery Co. There, in the valley of the River Findhorn, from the 16th century, there were many blackburners who lived on the sale of their whiskeys to travelers.
As early as 1906, the distillery had to be shut down, but was taken over in 1909 by the New Tomatin Distillers Co. Ltd and put back into operation. From then on, with the exception of the times of the two world wars, it produced almost uninterrupted.
As the demand for Tomatin whiskeys increased dramatically in the mid-1950s, distillery capacity increased from 1956 to 1964 to eleven stills in various stages of development. In 1974, the number of stills was increased again. Thus Tomintoul possessed 23 Brennblasen and could designate itself thereby as largest Scottish whiskey distillery.
In 1985, Tomatin went bankrupt and was shut down again. A year later, the distillery was bought by Japanese investment firms Takara, Shuzo and Okura & Co Ltd. is now managed by the subsidiary Marubeni Europe plc.
Burning is only with a number of twelve stills, the rest were dismantled.
