The island of Mauritius is not just known for its white sandy beaches and crystal clear sea, but also for the longstanding tradition of making rum. The fine sugarcane is cultivated directly on the island in large plantations, to be fermented to molasses afterwards. The resulting "Lazy Dodo Rum" is a blend of rum, stored mostly in oak barrels up to 12 years. This rum honors a mysterious bird, domestic to Mauritius, which has been extinct for many years. According to the records, the Dodo was not able to fly and very lazy. This laziness is reflected in the rum's name. Although the bird has been extinct for so many years, it is still considered the island's landmark today.
