History
Today's Glenrothes distillery was founded in 1878 by James Stuart Co. However, James Stuart retired during the construction, due to financial problems and disagreements with the other partners back.
The three leftover owners - William Grant, Robert Dick and John Cruickshank - took the distillery in 1979 under the name William Grant & Co. (not the same founder as in Balvenie and Glenfiddich, just the same name) in operation. Five years later, the distillery was renamed >> Glenrothes-Glenlivet <<.
After cooperation and a later mutual participation, the distillery merged in 1887 with the Islay Distillery Co., under the new name Highland Distillers Co. Ltd. This became the property of the Edrington Group in 1999.

Production
The Glenrothes distillery was rebuilt in 1897 after a fire and expanded at the same time. The number of stills was increased from two to four. Furthermore, an explosion occurred in 1903 and in 1922 a fire in the warehouse No.1 destroyed the, at the time, about 2,500 barrels stored whiskey barrels.
Further extensions were made over the years, with the number of stills steadily increasing. In 1963 from four to six, 1980 to eight and 1989 to ten stills (five onion-shaped washstills and spiritsstills).
The water used to make The GlenrothesWhiskey comes from the Ardcanny Spring and Brucehill Spring. The needed malt is delivered from the malting shop of the Thamdu distillery and then grinded by the old malt mill to grist before it is mashed with different hot water. This results in the word (wort) after filtration.
The Glenrothes has a total of 20 wash backs, of which 12 are Douglas fir and the rest are stainless steel. In them, the wort is then added to yeast to get the fermentation going.
The resulting wash (raw alcohol) is then double-distilled in the copper potstills (stills) in the stillhouse. The malts are stored in a certain ratio in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks.
To get the whiskey in the characteristic, round Glenrothes bottles with the handwritten label. This makeup is reminiscent of samplers used by distillers and malt experts in Scotland.
