History
The Glenmorangie distillery was founded and licensed by the brothers John and William Matheson. They used an old brewery to make their whiskey and distilled it into two former gin-stills.
Gradually, they converted the brewery building into a distillery. In order to make the conversions financially, they converted their family company in 1887 into the public company Glenmorangie Distillery Co. Ltd.
In 1918, more than a third of the shares were taken over by McDonald & Muir Ltd. The remaining shares were purchased by whiskey trader Durham Ltd. Due to the prohibition in the US Glenmorangie had to be shut down from 1931 to 1936.
MacDonald & Muir Ltd took over 100 percent of the shares in Glenmorangie Distillery Co. Ltd shortly after the resumption of production, and in 1966 the corporation was renamed Glenmorangie plc.
In October 2004, the French multi Louis Vuitton / Moet Hennessy took over the majority of shares of the Glenmorangie Group and renamed it as the new owner in The Glenmorangie Co..

Production
From 1970, the distillery was expanded again and again and the capacity of the stills increased. From 2009, there were already twelve stills in the stillhouse.
In 1980, the own malting was abandoned. Since the closure, the required barley malt has been sourced from large malting plants. In the ancient malt mill wied the malted malt grist to grist.

The storage
The malts of Glenmorangie Distillery are preferably matured in ex-boubon casks. For the so-called finnishings other types of barrels are used. Whiskey is stored for the last weeks or months in port, sherry, fino sherry, madeira, cognac, wine or rum barrels. For a few years now are also '' designer barrels '' made of more special types of wood getting used.
