History
The Glenkinchie Distillery was founded by Farmer Brothers John and George Rate. In 1837 they received the license for their distillery called Glenkinchie.
Previously, from 1825 to 1833, the two already operated another distillery. The Milton Distillery served the purpose to sell their barley even in bad times.
In 1853 they had to shut down Glenkinchie for financial reasons and sell the buildings to a farmer who used the distillery as a sawmill.
The Glenkinchie Distillery Co. Ltd became a new owner in 1890. A year later, the distillery resumed production. The owners of Glenkinchie founded the SMD in 1914 along with four other malt distilleries, which despite all efforts in 1925 became part of the DCL and in 1987 was taken over by the UDV.
Glenkinchie is also one of the few distilleries that continued to produce during the Second World War.
Glenkinchie has been part of Diageo plc since 1997 through another merger.

The storage
The Glenkinchie malt is matured in ex-Bourbon casks and stored in the warehouses on the distillery grounds. Ex-sherry casks are used for the so-called barrel finnishings.
