History
The Glendronach Distillery was licensed in 1826 by James Allardes. After a major fire in 1937, the distillery was rebuilt and in 1852 sold to Walter Scott, the owner of Teaninich. After his death in 1887, GlenDronach's line went to John Sommerville & Co. which in 1920 handed it over to Charles Grant, William Grant's son (Glenfiddich). Also Charles Grant sold the distillery in 1960 to William Teacher & Sons, which was taken over in 1976 together with GlenDronach by the Allied Distillers Ltd.
Because of too large stocks, the distillery was closed from 1995 for two years. In 1999, another decommissioning followed. Only in May 2002, the operation was resumed.
In 2005, the French Pernod Ricard Group took over the Allied Domecq and thus also GlenDronach. The Group did not believe GlenDronach fit for their portfoil, so they sold in 2008 again to Billy Walker and The BenRiach Distillery Company Ltd.
Since 2016, the distillery is owned by the US company Brown Forman.

Production
In 1966/67, the capacity of the stills was doubled after a removal and conversion. Since 2005, the stills are heated indirectly with steam, but they are still standing on their old coal stoves.
GlenDronach has its own floor maltings, which were still partly in operation until 1996. Today, the required malt is delivered from surrounding large malting plants, after which it is ground to grist in an ancient malt mill.

The storage
The malts of the GlenDronach Distillery are stored in old warehouses with natural soils. For maturation, they are stored in ex-sherry casks. Some malt types are later transferred to ex-bourbon barrels.
