History
As early as 1811, Hellen Cumming burned whiskey illegally. She lived with her husband John on a small farm in Cardow, Kanockando in the county of Banffshire. After John was sentenced three times because of his wife's black distillery, they still officially leased their distillery in 1824 under the name Cardow.
In 1846 her son Lewis took over the distillery. After Lewis's death in 1872, his widow Elizabeth. She decisively promoted Cardow's whiskey trade and was called The Queen of Whiskey Trade. In 1884, the distillery was rebuilt at a new location and expanded in 1887 to meet demand.
In 1893, Elizabeth sold the distillery to John Walker & Sons, who in 1925 joined the DCL and from 1930 was subject to the administrative leadership of the SMD. Only in 1981 was the name change in Cardhu. Thus, the long-standing confusion in the industry on the specific name designation has been eliminated.

Cardhu stores their malts primarily in ex-booby barrels in the warehouses on the distillery and is still one of the main ingredients of the Johnnie Walker blends. Some of the old warehouses date back to the time of Elisabeth Cumming.
