The history

The Buffalo Trace Distillery was founded in 1869 by Edmund Haynes Taylor, taking over an existing facility and naming it "Old Fire Copper" (O.F.C.). George T. Stagg supported him financially and passed the distillery 8 years later. In 1882, the distillery was badly damaged by lightning and the subsequent fire.

After the reconstruction in 1886 the warehouses were air-conditioned. In 1904, the distillery was named George T. Stag Distillery. From 1929 she belonged to Schenley (precursor of Diageo) and received their name. After further name changes, among other things she wore the name Ancient Age, the distillery went in 1992 in the hands of the Sazerac Company and received in 1999 its present name Buffalo Trace.

Buffalo Trace looks back on more than 200 years of history making it the oldest distillery in America.

No distillery has received the honor of more domestic and international awards than "Buffalo Trace". Writers, spirits lovers and competitions around the world have given more than 500 awards to their fires. For this she received the title "world's most award-winning distillery".

In 2013, the "Buffalo Trace Distillery" added another title to their collection that has received the most honors so far - National Historic Landmark (a place in the United States referred to by the Department of the Interior as being of particular importance).

The production

Buffalo Trace makes both Bourbon Whiskeys and some well-known Straight Rye Whiskey strains and Wheat Bourbon. For this purpose, three different mash recipes are used in the sour-mash process. Whole four stories high is the distillery. The so-called white dog before being bottled in barrels to 62.5% vol. reduced.

In addition to the eponymous Buffalo Trace whiskey, the brands Blanton's and Ancient Age are distributed. Other known varieties are the Eagle Rare, Sazerac Rye, W.L. Weller or the George T. Stagg. In addition, the Pappy van Winkle is manufactured and stored in Frankfort.

The storage

In the 15 warehouses, 14 of which are built of stone, more than 400,000 barrels with a volume of 200 liters each are stored. Buffalo Trace, however, plans to build new warehouses of steel, which are to be fully equipped with controllable climatic functions to leave nothing to chance. At the moment there are also about 4.000 experimental barrels.

The barrels themselves are made of American white oak and gecharred (charred) inside. The whiskeys are stored between four and 23 years.
