History
The Bruichladdich distillery was founded in 1881 by the three Harvey brothers Robert, William and John Gourlay. Her father Barnett Harvey built the distillery for his three sons on the shores of Loch Indaal.
Only five years later, Bruichladdich fell victim to a fire. In order to raise capital for reconstruction, partnerships were sought and the company converted to Bruichladdich Distillery Co. (Islay) Ltd. Until his death, starting in 1898, William Harvey as manager of the company.
From the late 1930s, the distillery changed very often its owner. The Invergordon Distillers plc took over the distillery in 1969. In 1975, capacity was also expanded and two more stills installed.
In 1995, the Bruichladdich Distillery was shut down after being bought by Whyte & Mackay (Beam Inc.) two years earlier.
In 2000, Mark Reynier, partner at Murray McDavid Ltd, bought and restored the Victorian-style distillery and in 2001, production resumed.
Since July 2012 Bruichladdich is owned by Rémy Cointreau.

The production
Bruichladdich sources her whiskey-making water from Bruichladdich Lake and the Octomore Spring. The malted barley Bruichladdich gets supplied by large malt companies. On some fillings, e.g. the Scottish Barley Edition, even the farm from which the barley was sourced was noted.
In the traditional mash tun made of cast iron plates, the barley is mashed. Since the mash tun has no lid, one has an unobstructed view of the racks (rakes), which circulate the mash. The resulting word (wort) is fermented in the six existing wash backs (fermenting vats) of Douglas fir wood.
In Bruichladdich stillhouse stand four stills (two wash and spirit stills) with round boilers in pairs opposite. In 2010, another Lomond was raised quietly. However, this produces instead of whiskey, gin.
The Bruichladdich distillery currently produces three different brands of whiskey. The untested Bruichladdich, the peated Port Charlotte and the very heavily peated Octomore (258 ppm).
The barrel storage
Bruichladdich prefers to store her malts in ex-bourbon casks, and the warehouses are made of brick. The barrel diversity is very large. Among other things, wine barrels from Italy, port barrels and a Chateau d'Yquem barrel from France are used for storage.
