The history
Named after the city of Bowmore, the distillery is the oldest on the shores of Loch Indaal, on the whiskey island of Islay, an approximately forty-kilometer-long Hebridean island off the Scottish west coast.
Built in 1779 by David Simons, it became the first legal distillery on the island to be licensed in 1824. The company was sold to William Mother in 1837 by the Simons family. After taking over his two sons William and James, the company formed under the name W. & J. Mutter & Co and was expanded for the first time. Another, larger expansion in 1892.
Later, the distillery was joined by several shareholders in the Bowmore Distillery Company Ltd. converted. After further owner changes over the years, bought in 1989, the Japanese Suntory Ltd. Group. the first 35 percent of the share capital and finally took over the company in 1994 completely.

The production
The Bowmore distillery itself has a multi-storey malt house and is one of the few distilleries that produce at least a portion (about 40%) of the required malt on their own floor maltings themselves.
Previously, the barley delivered is soaked in large steeps (water troughs) and then spread on the floor maltings. The incipient germination is interrupted in the kilns, by the drying process. Bowmore heats the kiln with peat from the Laggan Mosspeat Moor.
Bowmore uses the water of the Lagan, which rises in the peat bog. From the spring in the moor it flows for about 12 kilometers to the distillery over "holy earth", which gives the water an earthy note.
The barley grinded to a malt in the malt mill is poured into a stainless steel mash tun with a copper lid, filled and mixed. The resulting word (wort) is fermented in six wooden wash backs (fermenting vats) of Douglas fir, before being distilled into the four onion-shaped and very slender stills.
The barrel storage
For ripening, the malts are stored in ex-sherry and ex-bourbon barrels. For finishings but also other types of barrels are used.
