The history
In 1892, William Grant bought a rundown estate, which was in the immediate vicinity of his distillery Glenfiddich. It was built in 1724 from the old stones of Balvenie Castle - a castle that was located in Dufftown in the 13th century. With his children, he built the Guts ruin by hand into a distillery.
In order to save costs, William Grant made the decision not to purchase any new distillation equipment. Thus, in 1893, the first new make flowed through the used stills of the Lagavulin and Glen Albyn distilleries.
Today Balvenie is one of the few independent Scottish companies, owned by William Grant & Sons.

The Production
In 1955, Balvenie was first renovated for the first time. In 1957, the old stills were removed and replaced, and two additional stills were installed. Until the year 1971, additional stills were installed.
On its own malting floors, 15-20 percent of the required malt is still produced and dried in the kilns, with only a small amount of peat in the fire. The remainder is sourced from large malting plants.
In an old malt mill, both the delivered and the self-produced malt is ground to grist.

The storage
Balvenie's old and rare whiskeys are stored in warehouse 24, which used to be the basement of Balvenie House. Some of the other warehouses are equipped with storage racks to stack several barrels.
The storage itself takes place in ex-Bourbon barrels, but also in sherry barrels. For the so-called Finnishing other drum types are used in which earlier z.b. Port or rum was saved.
The malt is bottled in the Glenfiddich Distillery, which has a fully automatic bottling line.
