The History
The distillery in the north of Glasgow, was mentioned as early as 1800 under the name Duntocher Distillery and built by John Bulloch, who gave it in 1822 to his son Archibald Bulloch. The founding year of Auchentoshan is 1823, although it was first licensed in 1825 as a Duntocher. Officially, the distillery received the name Auchentoshan only in 1834.
Until the beginning of the 20th century changed Duntocher / Auchentoshan their owners unusually frequent, on average, every 10 years.
During World War II, Glasgow Harbor was bombed on the River Clyde. The buildings of Auchentoshan and the warehouses, with more than a million liters of whiskey, went up in flames.
After successful reconstruction of the distillery, this could resume production in 1948. In the following years, Auchentoshan changed hands several times until it became the property of Morrison Bowmore Distillers Ltd. from 1984 onwards passed over. In their possession, a lot of money was invested in the conversion and expansion of the distillery and outdoor area, with all three stills were renewed in the stillhouse.
In 1994, the Morrison Bowmore Distillers Ltd. taken over by the Suntory Group (Japan).

The Production
Auchentoshan draws his malt from large malting plants and it is used exclusively undetached malt. The clear spring water of Loch Cochno in the Kilpatrick Hills is used for the distillation. It is the only distillery in the Lowlands that burns three times. The three stills all have a different shape and have a recess at the neck.
The first thing is to burn in the wash. Subsequently, the low wines (about 18 percent alcohol) are burned in the intermediate still another time. The resulting product, with an alcohol content of 58 percent, is last fired again in the spirit-still. The heart of the last distillation is called new make and has a very high alcohol content of 80-82 percent, compared to other Scottish distilleries.
The storage
Before bottling in ex-Bourbon barrels, the alcohol content is reduced to 63.5 percent, after maturing again to the desired drinking strength. For the so-called finishings other types of barrels are used.
