History

The Amrut Distillery was founded in 1948 by Shri J.N. Radhakrishna, in the early days of the independent Indian Federal Republic in Bangalore. At the beginning, he supplied the Indian military with his spirits and was thus able to achieve great sales. When J.N.R. died in 1976, his son Shri Neelakanta Rao Jagdale took over the company and brought it to an international level through cooperation with other companies and the expansion of the product portfolio.

Today, in addition to the main distillery built in 1987 in Kambipura, the company owns two further distilleries and several bottling plants. Meanwhile, Amrut is one of India's most famous distilleries and has received many international awards.

Production

Amrut not only produces blended whiskeys but also single malts. Also brandy, gin, vodka and rum. The six-rowed barley used at Amrut derives from Punjab and Rajasthan. The grain is brought by truck to the distillery 2500 km. Also, the water has to be brought by truck from a local source. This results in the mash. After adding the yeast, the fermentation process takes five days. Distillation takes place in two pot stills (a wash and a spirit still). Amrut has its own coopery where the barrels get prepared before bottling.

The storage

Amrut owns three-storied warehouses in which the barrels are stored. Due to the climate difference to Scotland, the whiskeys ripen faster. Due to the heat, about 12% a year are getting lost to fishingsshare. That's why one can't compare, for example, a 10 year old Armut to a Scotch Whiskey of the same age group. The Amrut whiskey is also available with different barrel finishes.
